12 April 2018

Following are the welcome remarks by the Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Mr Nicholas W Yang, at the Internet Economy Summit 2018 today (April 12):

Chief Executive, President Ma (President of the China Internet Development Foundation, Ms Ma Li), Under-Secretary Dr Akhtar (Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, Dr Shamshad Akhtar), Mr Mu (Member of the Standing Committee of the Guizhou CPC Provincial Committee and Head of the Publicity Department of Guizhou Province Mr Mu Degui), Ms Qi (Director General of the Bureau of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs of the Cyberspace Administration of China, Ms Qi Xiaoxia), Mr Chen (Director General of the Youth Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr Chen Lin), distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

Good morning, everyone.

First, I would like to extend a warm welcome to our special guests, distinguished speakers and participants of the Internet Economy Summit 2018, including official representatives from member states of the United Nations who attended the Asia-Pacific Business Forum 2018 during the past two days.

This year's summit theme is "New Impetus for the New Economy". In the coming two days, dozens of heavyweight speakers will share with us their insights and experiences on how to capture the huge opportunities and economic benefits brought along by Internet technology development. The Chief Executive will speak on how the Hong Kong SAR Government pursues innovation and technology vigorously to drive Hong Kong's future development. Our Mainland and overseas speakers will share with us the latest development trends, landscape in the Mainland and around the world, and how we can seize the opportunities from the latest Internet economy development trends as well as national policies such as the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area.

Tomorrow afternoon, we will, for the first time, organise a Youth Programme designed for secondary and tertiary students. They will join the Hong Kong ICT Awards winners' sharing, an interactive tech showcase and a guided tour to the Hong Kong ICT Expo, which is held concurrently with this Summit next door.

With a full and exciting agenda, I am confident that we will find new impetus for new achievement in today's Internet economy. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the China Internet Development Foundation and Hong Kong Cyberport for co-organising this annual flagship event.

Last but not least, I wish you a rewarding summit. For friends from overseas and the Mainland, please enjoy our city's vibrancy and hospitality during your stay. Thank you very much.
